Childbirth Education with a Christian PerspectiveA First in Columbus, OhioMarch 3, 2003 -- Something new has come to Columbus, a class that combines the edification of the child birth process with the uplifting power of faith in Christ. Childbirth Education with a Christian Perspective is now being offered at Grace Brethren Polaris through three different six week sessions this year. All classes are Tuesday nights 6:30 to 9:00 PM. The goal in teaching this series is to help Christian couples bring Christ back into the preparation and process of pregnancy and labor and delivery. In addition to the typical pillows, expectant couples will be asked to bring a Bible to class. The classes will cover all of the factual and statistical knowledge of labor and delivery and the immediate postpartum period. Some of the distinct characteristics of this class are that it will start with Scripture and Prayer and continue to use faith in discussing childbirth issues. Concrete examples include; asking couples how their faith in Christ can be applied to pregnancy and labor and delivery, encouraging couples to see that God created a woman’s body to give birth, to ask couples to add prayer and faith in God’s timing to their care giver’s medical advice, and to equip couples with comfort measure for labor that are compatible with a Christian faith. This last one is especially important because Christian couples might not even realize that this is possible. Examples of Christian specific comfort measures are pointing out certain Scriptures, prayerful affirmations to use verbally, and relaxation and visualization exercises that are based on Biblical principles instead of Eastern or New Age meditations.
