What is a doula?

Doulas are not a new concept, they were originally the head female servant of the household who helped the lady of the house through childbirth as far back as BC times. However, with the increased distance between family members Doulas are making an important comeback as an invaluable member of the birth team.

In the past couple of years the term "doula" has expanded to include many different services. All of them encompass compassion and support by "mothering the mother."

Personal Profile

My name is Tamara Kaufman and I have been a doula since January of 2001. I have experience with natural and medicated birth, caesarian and traditional birth, breech presentation, water birth, hospital birth, and home birth. I have worked as an birth and postpartum Doula at different times.

I am a member and Certified Labor Doula of Childbirth and Postpartum Professionals Association (CAPPA). I am a certified Moms In Motion Pre/Postnatal Exercise Instructor. I am a certified Operation Special Delivery Doula.
